Hilton to hire 20,000 vets by 2020

Hilton recently announced that it plans to hire 20,000 veterans and military spouses, dependents, and caregivers by 2020. This is in addition to the 10,000 veterans and military family members Hilton has hired in the U.S. since 2013 as part of its Operation: Opportunity program. Of those 10,000 hires, 10 percent were military spouses and dependents. Hilton extended its goal to 20,000 military hires after it reached 10,000 hires two years ahead of schedule.
To support veterans, Hilton has established a Veteran Team Member Resource Group and awards special recognitions to team members who are veterans. Hilton also offers veterans internships, on-the-job training, and career development resources.
Jobs at Hilton are well-suited for military family members because the company offers positions in many locations around the world, and some jobs can be performed remotely. Thus, military spouses can hold on to these jobs during deployments and relocations. Some roles that allow remote work are Reservations, Sales Specialist, and Customer Care Coordinator. Hilton provides online training for both of these positions. Full-time remote employees receive the same benefits as on-site employees, include medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with matching contributions, and paid time off. Hilton announced that it is recruiting military family members for remote positions through a partnership with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which serves military caregivers.
CNN Money reports that Hilton has created a system to identify jobs that veterans may be qualified for. The system takes a job applicant’s Military Occupational Specialties code, which is used to categorize jobs in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, and matches the code with open positions at Hilton that require comparable skills. A military background could prepare someone for a career in security or engineering, but veterans can find jobs in all areas of hotel operations. Some examples of positions that veterans have accepted include front office manager, human resource director, group rooms coordinator, payroll supervisor, strategic account manager, and director of catering and events.
In another initiative to support veterans and their families, Hilton donates Hilton Honors Points to veterans, giving veterans free hotel stays to use when they apply for jobs or pursue career training or certification. Veterans can use the points when they seek jobs in any industry. More than 1,100 veterans have benefited from the program and have used the points for more than 1,700 stays in Hilton hotels.
Hilton’s founder, Conrad Hilton, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War I.
