6 leading hospitality companies make Fortune’s best places to work list
5 hotels and 1 restaurant chain were included in Fortune’s recently published “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. Fortune has been publishing the list annually since 1998, making this year the 20th anniversary of the high-profile rankings of US companies. Google took the top spot on Fortune’s list again this year for the eighth time in 11 years.
The rankings are based in part on anonymous employee surveys and corporate questionnaires, surveying companies and over 200,000 employees across multiple industries for things like workplace environment, company leadership, relationships with colleagues, compensation and benefits, hiring practices, recognition, training, and diversity programs.
Here are the hospitality companies that made the list this year:
(#14) Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants
This is Kimpton’s 8th year on Fortune’s list, moving up from the twentieth spot last year to 14th.
HQ Location: San Francisco
Total number of employees: 8,142
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 650
What Fortune says: "The pet-friendly hotel chain’s employees love the support for diversity, flexible work schedules, lack of hierarchy, and promote-from-within culture. (It doesn’t hurt that hotel staff can bring their dogs to work and stay in any hotel for just $50 a night.)"
Hilton moved up this year from being ranked #56 in 2016. This is the second year Hilton has made the list.
HQ Location: McLean, VA
Total employees: 165,506
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 42,608
What Fortune says: "The nearly 100-year-old global hotel chain earns accolades for ‘endless opportunities’ for advancement, and recently started paying for employees’ GEDs."
Hyatt has spent 4 years on Fortune’s list, and was seated at #47 last year.
HQ location: Chicago
Total number of employees: 100,000
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 3,500
What Fortune says: "With 40,000 workers and hundreds of hotels in the U.S. alone, Hyatt still feels like a ‘home away from home’ for employees. Staffers say ‘amazing’ benefits (like free on-site dry cleaning and complimentary or discounted hotel stays) help promote an environment of ‘fairness, love, and respect’ and a feeling of ‘family’ at the company."
(#33) Marriott International
Marriott is one of only 12 companies that has made Fortune’s list every single year since it’s founding in 1998. The large hotel chain moved up significantly this year from last year’s spot at #83.
HQ location: Bethesda, MD
Total number of employees: 218,512
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 57,564
What Fortune says: "Employees say that ‘you’re only limited by yourself’ at this multinational hospitality company, where ‘unlimited opportunities to grow’ have helped keep nearly 13,000 Marriott staffers at the company for more than 20 years. It has homed in on diversity too: 58% of frontline and middle managers are women, and 36% are minorities."
(#48) The Cheesecake Factory
The restaurant chain has landed a spot on on the list for four years, moving up quite a bit this year from #98 in 2016.
HQ location: Calabasas Hills, CA
Total number of employees: 36,957
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 2,300
What Fortune says: "Leadership support for its people is ‘second to none’ at this restaurant chain, where staff praise ‘warmhearted’ management for ‘their amazing flexibility’ and ‘keeping everyone positively motivated.’ The company stresses employee development, and all external management hires start at a junior level to better learn the culture."
(#79) Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts
Like Marriott, the Four Seasons is also a part of small group of companies that have occupied a spot on Fortune’s list every year since its inception. The hotel chain was ranked #70 on the list in 2016.
HQ location: Toronto
Total number of employees: 41,201
Job openings (as of Feb. 2017): 1,159
What Fortune says: "Staff at the luxury hotelier are ‘proud’ of the ‘great reputation’ around the world for stellar customer service. And guests aren’t the only ones who get the five-star treatment: Staff go ‘above and beyond’ to help coworkers in need, and every employee gets to stay at Four Seasons hotels on vacation for free (food is 50% off too)."
